6 C4 – Improving Capacity and Energy in Dealing With Difficult People Module 2: Screen 37 through 39 Stop and Reflect Exercise This exercise first asks the student to look up their INT% score and reflect on why they recorded that result. Then the student is asked to write down answers to the following questions, which will provide them background information about the stresses in their life, and will be used to create their Communication Action Plan in Module 4. o On a scale of 1 to 10, rate the extent to which you see worn out people struggling at work. o Using the same 10-point scale as above, rate the extent to which you feel yourself worn down and having less problem-solving energy. o Identify at least four more examples in your work-life of the first type of stress – stresses you can name. Name as many as you can and write them down. o Identify at least four or more examples in your work-life of the second type of stress – stresses you cannot name. Give this some thought and see if you can identify the source of theses stressors and name them as best you can. Write them down. o On a scale of 1 to 10 as above, rate the extent to which these stresses (both Type 1 and Type 2) are sapping your problem-solving energy. o Put a check mark beside those stresses with which you are having a problem. o For the stresses you have checked, think about the resources you have at your disposal and determine which ones you might be able to use against some of these stresses. Write down as many resources as you can think of. Think about people who may be able to help you clarify your Type 2 stressors and deal with each type of stress. For each stress ask: What name or label can I put on this issue? What specifically can I do to address this issue? What might I need help with? Who could help? How could this person or resource help? When could I take a specific action Where might this action take place? What else might I be able to do to del with this stress? o Now, go ahead and complete this exercise for stresses in your personal life as well. This exercise becomes the basis for their Communication Action Plan. It is optional to share this exercise with their supervisor or mentor.
